Gutter Check Up – Winter Gutter Maintenance
source
Winter is almost half-way over and spring is fast approaching. Now is the time to see how your home is holding up before the real nasty, cold weather comes in. Since most homeowners are about to finally take down those lights and decorations that you worked so hard to get on your roof and gutters, it is prime time to check those gutters. These are a few thing to check to make sure your gutters are in tip-top shape.
• It may not be raining at the moment, but you can count on rain in the future. With all the wind we have had, check gutters to make sure they are clear of leaves or other debris. While you are up there, check to make sure support brackets are secure.
• Do a test by spraying the garden hose at various points around your roof. Is water draining away at downspouts? Make sure it is not flowing behind the gutters.
• If you have ridge vents, make sure these are free of debris.
• Prevent Ice Dams – When water freezes along the lower edge of the roof, ice dams form. These ice dams can prevent water from properly draining off the roof, causing potentially costly roof leaks. To prevent this, install roof or soffit vents to assure proper attic ventilation.
